Green tea,native to China and East Asia has been consumed for its health benefits from a long time. However Green tea has gained a lot of popularity in past decade across the World.
The four biggest tea-producing countries across the world today are China, India, Sri Lanka and Kenya. They together contribute to 75% of worlds production which clearly shows the demand for green tea in international market. Tea is the most common drink in the worlds after water. Introduction of green tea as an aid for weight loss has helped it gain more popularity. As a result of which green tea contributes to 20% of total tea consumed across the globe.
What is Green tea?
Green tea is a type of tea which is made from leaves of tea plant (tea tree). The leaves have undergone withering and oxidation process as same as the normal black tea. However due to less intense processing and difference in processing methods green tea is considered one of world’s healthiest drinks. Also Green tea contains one of the highest amounts of antioxidants of any tea.
Which is better, Green tea or black tea ?
Green and black teas have 10 times the amount of antioxidants found in fruits and veggies. Even though both of them are made from the same plant,in comparison its green tea which gets more praise. Green tea contains more antioxidants and EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) as well , a plant based compound which is lost in black tea during its fermentation.
How is green tea related to weight loss ?
The caffeine and flavonoids present in green tea acts as a stimulant in fat burning process. Green tea is rich in antioxidants (catechins).As a result of which it helps in boosting metabolic rate. It helps in burning fat more effectively (fat oxidation) and improves insulin activity which aids weight loss. However among different varieties of green tea the best option for weight loss is matcha tea. The Matcha tea is fresh tea leaves ground and is consumed as tea’ without any hard end processing or steeping.
How much Green tea per day ?
The polyphenols in green tea are good for body and have immunity boosting capacity. Since the amount of polyphenols allowed per day is 300–320 mg which brings green tea per day quantity to 3-4 cups. For weight loss 2-3 cups of green tea per day average could help you get good amount of antioxidants.

As we know ‘Too much of anything is bad for health’. Over consumption of green tea can cause stomach problems and issues like constipation. Also the EGCG present in green tea when found excessive in body can cause liver & kidney problems. Green tea is a good source of caffeine taking it over the permissible quantity can cause dizziness and headache.
For preparing green tea always try to boil the water separately for 5 to 10 minutes. To the boiled water Add tea powder/leaves and do not boil the tea directly as it may lead to losing the healthy chemicals while direct boiling.
